On This Day – Stagger Lee (Yet Again)

On this day in 1959 Lloyd Price reached number one in the States with “Stagger Lee”.

“Stagger Lee” has been recorded many times under many names by many people.

The song has been Bowderized, revised, chewed up and spat out by too many people to mention. Some of whom should have known better and some of whom had no idea of the history of the song and what it was about.

The definitive recordedversion was by the wonderful Mississippi John Hurt in 1928 although the song had been sung ever sinc ethe original crime in 1895.

Just why this particular crime became immortalised is not known (at least to me). The facts of the case m’lud, as the say, are quite simple. Stagger Lee Shelton was pimp and taxi driver in St. Louis. Not just any pimp along with a number of other pimps collectively known as “The Macks” they seemed to love the attention they got. Stagger was friends with Billy Lyons. One night they were drinking and began to talk politics, that developed into an arguement. Billy took Stagger’s hat from his head. Stagger demanded it back, Billy refused and Stagger shot him.

Killed over a hat.

Stagger and Billy became subject of a song that has mutated and survived during the following 100 years and shows no sign of being forgotten 115 years after the crime.

Alternative titles have included; “Stagolee”, “Stackerlee”, “Stack O’Lee”, “Stack-a-Lee”, “Stack Shot Billy”, and other variants that owe a lot to the original like The Clash’s “Wrong ‘Em Boyo”.

Among the artists that have sung and recorded the song are; Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly, Sidney Bechet, Beck, Pat Boone, James Brown, Cephas & Wiggins, Neil Diamond, Johnny Dodds, Fats Domino, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Woody Guthrie, Bill Haley & His Comets, The Isley Brothers, Taj Mahal, Memphis Slim, Modern Life is War, Wilson Pickett, Professor Longhair, Sam the Sham, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Ma Rainey, Tom Rush, Ike and Tina Turner, Dave Van Ronk, Doc Watson, George Thorogood, Muddy waters, Billie Holiday, Nick cave

Anyway you get the idea virtually evryone who is someone has recorded a version of the song.

The interesting thing about Lloyd Price’s version? It removed any referrence to the murder and Stagger and Billy just shouted at each other and made up the next day…..

On This Day – Teen Angel Tops

On this day in 1960 Mark Dinning hit number 1 in the States with his ode to careful parking “Teen Angel”. This is a song about parking a car on a railway crossing and the inherent perils that poses.

Not the first teenage death song there have been many tragic pop songs. Notable songs on the list include the classics; “Endless Sleep” (1958 – Jody Reynolds), “Tell Laura I love Her” (1960 – Ray Peterson), and – of course – “Honey” by Bobby Goldsboro (Although that song is tragic on so many levels…..)

I rather think that song titles should warn you about the content which is why I have a soft spot for the Smith’s “Girlfriend in a Coma”. I also think that if people hit on a winning formula it is sometimes a mistake to follow it slavishly. After all The Shangri-Las had a lot going for them but they are now remembered for just 3 songs. “I Can never Go Home Anymore”, “Give Us Your Blessing”, and the one that started this path of despair, “Leader of the Pack”.

It would seem that “Leader of the Pack” also inspired Jim Steinman to write “Bat Out of Hell”, which you may or may not think is a good thing.

Songs about tradgedies are nothing new but we tend to forget some of the older ones. Billi Holiday’s Strange Fruit remains as powerful and disturbing as the day it was recorded.

On the other hand her version of “Gloomy Sunday” is a classic way of changing the direction of a tragic song. In the original version the narrator commits suicide. In Holiday’s version she wakes up and it has all been a dream…….

Another song that has been tweaked is “Season’s in the Sun”. The song is the narrator’s dieing farewell to his wife, friends and family. The original refers to the wife’s infidelity while the popular English versions refer instead to a young and innocent daughter.

2 Resolutions Broken!

When I started this blog I promissed myself 2 things;

1. I would never, never, talk about politics (well, this is supposed be about music)

2. I would never talk about ear hole music (folk) or C&W (the devil’s music).

So, 2 resolutions broken. Folk and politcs.

David Jones is a well respected folk singer in the UK, and here he is singing a classic anti-capitalist, left wing song. I know nothing about the chap that he is supporting, and do not care particularly. All I know is that it resonates of “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist” (an essential book in everyone’s political education) and is a song that I sang in my youth at political rallies. The song kicks in at about 5.50 (ish).

On This Day (Nearly) – Billy Fury Dies

220px Fury Statue 150x150 On This Day (Nearly) Billy Fury DiesThis is one that got away from me….On this day (yesterday) in 1983 Billy Fury died from heart and kidney problems. He was 42.

Billy Fury was almost unknown in the States but in the UK he was huge in the early 60s. In fact he had 24 hits in the UK charts in the 60s, equalling the Beatles’ record in the 60s. He also spent 332 weeks in the UK charts during that period. He was part of the early Mersey Boom of the 60s. His early performances were controversial and he had to tone down his on stage gyrations…….

His later life was dogged with ill health (he suffered from rheumatic fever as a child which laid the foundations for his later illness). He had major heart surgery in 1976.

Such was his contribution to music in the UK that there is a statue of Billy at the Albert Dock in Liverpool showing him in a typical on stage pose.

On This Day – Peggy, er, Pegs Out

On this day in 2002 the wonderful Peggy Lee died at home after having a heart attack.

Born Norma Deloris Egstrom in North Dakota Peggy Lee came from scandinavian stock and was a revered vocalist given her first big break by Benny Goodman, the band leader and jazz clarinetist.

Most of us will know her from her version of ‘Fever’ recorded in 1958 but she left a large body of work.  Her recording carrer that started in 1942 lasted for some 50 years and she won 3 Grammy awards.  She also appeared in a number of films (her performance as an alcoholic blues singer in Pete kelly’s Blues was nominated for an Oscar) and was a songwriter.

On This Day – Rock ‘n’ Roll Has To Go!

On this day in 1958 radio station KWK in St Loius announced that Rock ‘n’ roll was to be banned from their air waves. According to the station manager, Robert T Convey (along with most Brits I find the American habit of using their middle initial faintly comical. I would never refer to myself as Phil A Stutt, Phil Stutt is much more natural, as would Robert Convey – but I digress, again) said that their action was “a simple weeding out of undesirable music”. It was certainly simple, and short sighted, and so wrong.

The station was playing rock ‘n’ roll a couple of years later.

Coincidentally on this day in 1958 the Silhouettes released a rock ‘n’ roll classic “Get a Job”. I have no data on Mr Convey’s job status after he decided to ban R ‘n’ R.

In ’78 KWK hired an interesting character to work for them. Bobby Hattrik was employed to programme the music and wanted to make KWK one of the foremost rock stations. Apart from his talent for programing and understanding what the listeners wanted he was also quite creative. He pioneered calling listeners to undertake polls (called outcall research). There are also stories stories of him phoning listeners in the middle of the night and posing as a caller from rival radio stations. He also ran battle of the bands spots.  He would play tracks from 2 bands and ask the audience who they preferred. If he felt that the audience was wrong he would over ride their votes and go for the band he liked most – sounds like my type of guy.

He was murdered in 1986.

La Toya was Right Michael Jackson Murdered

michael jackson 3 150x120 La Toya was Right Michael Jackson MurderedBack in June, just after his death Lat Toya Michael Jackson’s sister claimed that he had been murdered. It wuld seem that she was right.

The death certificate was amended on August 31st by the medical examiner, Christopher Rogers, the cause of death now reads ‘homicide’. It talks of “acute Propofol intoxication” and “intravenous injection by another”. There was no evidence of illegal drugs in Michael’s body at the time of death and he was in relatively good heath for a man of his age.

This is, potentially, very bad news for his doctor Conrad Murray. It is thought that he is to be indicted on a charge of ‘involuntary manslaughter’. The police are talking about a charge involving gross negligence saying that the care given to Michael was way below the standard of care normally given by physicians.

The coroner found that propofol was given to Michael without any medical need or the recommended resuscitation equipment being in place. Propofol depresses the breathing, heart rate and lowers blood pressure.

Murray was in Michael’s rented LA mansion when he died and tried to try to revive him when he was found unconcious. Through his spokemen Murray has issued a cautious ‘no comment’ to the speculation that he about to be charged. The spokesmen went on to repeat that Murray neither prescribed or administered anything that should have caused Michael’s death.

For a successfull prosecution the prosecuter woiuld have to prove that there was a reckless action that created a risk of injury or death. Where the accused is a doctor there are also other issues such as was the patient made fully aware of the risks and did he accept them?

When (if) Murray is charged depends on a few things such as how soon can a grand jury be convened and how long will the DA’s review of the evidence presented by the police take. The police investigation was largely completed in December and it included interviews with medical proffessionals much attention being given to expected standards of care.

Obviously, Michael did not realise that he had been murdered because he did not mention it during his seance with Derek Acorah. Can’t say that I am surprised…….

Ronnie and Mick to Meet

It would seem that the proposed Stones tour is still in danger of not going ahead because of fears for Ronnie Wood’s health.

As has been widely reported Ronnie has an alcohol problem and it is this that has cast a shadow over the proposed tour. Mick is, as we all know, heavily involved in the organisation and running of the tours. Micro managing them to a rediculous extent according to some reports from previous tours. In any event, he will want to be sure that Ronnie is up to it.

It should not be forgotten that they are also old friends and Mick must be concerned on a personal level. As for Ronnie 2009 has been a year that he must want to forget. He divorced his wife Jo towards the end of the year and moved in with his young girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova. Since then he has moved out after a disagreement outside a restaurant in Surrey, allegedly, resulted in him choking her (maybe it was an inept attempt at the Heimlich maneuver squeezing the throat rather than the abdomen).

The daily Express was told “Mick and Ronnie will talk things through in the New Year. They are old friends and Mick will obviously do everything he can to help him. But when it comes to the Stones, Mick has a real eye for detail and always ensures things run like clockwork. He’ll need to be convinced that Ronnie is still up to the job. Hopefully everything will work out, as it would break Ronnie’s heart if the Stones had to perform without him.”

Although there would be all the old jokes about locking up your grannies if the Stones do tour I would love to see them on the road, again. My caveat would be that they should strip down the shows. Forget the pyrotechnics, let the music light up the stage. Their best album for some time was ‘Stripped’ and that was a very simple affair. Were they to do that and go back to their blues roots I would be first in the queue for tickets.

From Stripped, this is classic.

The highlight from the album was this, Told yer that they were still good playing blues…..

Michael Jackson – The Funeral, Court Judgements, It Just Goes On….

michael Joe Michael Jackson The Funeral, Court Judgements, It Just Goes On....Michael Jackson was a great singer. His personal and financial lives were a mess. The wrangle over money continues.

last week his father (Joe) lost his battle to get some money from the estate. He was also told that he could not challenge the executives named in Michael’s will. You will remember that Michael had a ‘strained’ relationship with Joe. MJ had said that at some times during his life, both when a child and as an adult, he had felt physically sick at the sight of his father. So, not a normal close father son relationship, apparently.

It was a bit of a fractious day in court which ended with Judge Beckloff saying; “I don’t think he gets to step into this and create further litigation,” the judge declared. “Joe Jackson takes none of this estate. This is a decision his son made.” Seems fair to me.

Joe can, however, make a claim for living expenses on the basis that Michael was supporting him when he died. What sort of expenses? They include; Rent, $1,200. Dining out, $2,500. Entertainment & holidays, $1,000. Air travel; $2,000. Hotels; $3,000. Those are monthly expenses. The rent seems a bit low for a place in Las Vegas, but he got double his rent to eat out? Learn to cook is my advice. However, perhaps he did not need to rent a big place as he spent almost 3 times his rent on hotel rooms. As for the air travel, has no one in the USA’s C list celeb community heard of global warming?

Joe also gets $1,700 per month social security. What?

The funeral. Ah yes. You will remember that until he died Michael was, relatively, poor. that being one of the reasons he agreed to the daunting O2 schedule. However, the estate must be in good shape, what with the album sales and the film grossing squillions of dollars. It has to be to pay for the funeral.

The funeral took place on 3rd September and was really fit for ‘The King of Pop’.

$860,000 to Forest Lawn Cemetery for the purchase of plots in the family mausoleum and funeral charges.
$35,000 for funeral garments (presumably Michael’s).
$1,975 for the family’s wardrobe. (?)
$2,000 for the ushers’ costumes.
$3,682 to frame a photo of Michael (the one next to the coffin).
$959 for embroidery.
$11,716 for invitations (and prgrammes).
$30,000 for security and cars.
$15,000 for a funeral designer/director.
$21,455 for the ‘funeral repast’. (When I go there will be a couple of hundred quid behind the bar at my local).

In order to pay for the funeral Kathleen (Michael’s mother) filed papers with the administrators of the state for money to be released only 3 days before the funeral. They, obviously, had to agree. Apparently the papers said that without the funds being released that “the funeral will not proceed.” If that happened it would have caused Kathleen and the family “public embarrassment and added grief, along with the daunting task of having to make new arrangements.”

Surely they should have sorted out the money before arranging the funeral?

A statement for the family said;

“Mrs. Jackson and her family wish to honour her son by a funeral that seeks to offer solace to his multitude of fans and by which the family also may be comforted,” the attorneys said. The costs were substantial but “entirely commensurate with the decedent’s worldwide status as an entertainer and the world’s grief over his death.”

It is all such a mess.

Outside court on Tuesday, lawyer Howard Weitzman, who represents the administrators, said: “I would have done it less expensively. But it was Michael Jackson, who was larger than life. There’s no reason he should not have a funeral that’s larger than life.”

Isn’t there is something odd about saying that a funeral should be larger than life?

The funeral costs were on top of the costs of the Staple Centre tribute…………
