On This day – Brian Jones

1969, is it really 40 years ago? Brian jones was found dead in his swimming pool.

He was the original guitatist with the Stolling Bones, arguably their best period – when they still played blues based rock.  Jones’ influences were jazz and blues with him citing Elmore james, Robert Johnson (see my article Records that Changed the World, point proved),and Cannonball Adderley (yes Iknow he played sax), among others.

He left his native Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK in disgrace having got his 14 year old girlfriend pregnant.  He spent sometime abroad before making his way to London.

It was Jones who placed the original advert in a local jazz newsletter for musicians that brought the Stones together.  Ian ‘Stew’ Stewart (the Stone that who too old for their image but stayed and played with them for years, as an employee of the band I believe) was the first to respond.  The others came over time, jagger introduced Richards (who brought his love of Chuckles Berry to the band) and finally Bill Wyman (who brought his Vox AC30).

Then there was Alexis Korner who helped the band and the rest is history.

By the time he died Jone was a shadow of his former self, a victim of LSD, uppers, downers, alcohol, and effectively ousted from his own band.  He was found floating face down in the pool at his house in East Sussex.  His then girlfriend claimed that he was alive when pulled from the pool but was dead by the time the ambulance arrived.  There is a widely known story that he was murdered by a builder working on the house.  There are stories of a death bed confession, witnesses that refuse to talk to the police, looting and thefts from the house after his death.

The truth will probably never be known for certain.  One thing that we do know is that this man stated what was, for a considerable time, the best rock band in the world.

On This Day – 2nd July

Ralph Nader (serial presidential candidate, consumer champion, pain in the arse of car makers, general all round good guy in other words) warned us in 1969 that loud rock music would make us all go deaf. I SAID THAT LOUD ROCK MUSIC WOULD MAKE US ALL GO DEAF…..

I so want this to be true, James Marshall Hendrix was honorably discharged from the US army on this day in 1962 after nreaking his ankle on his 26th parachute jump. I want it to be true but there is quite a lot of evidence that Jimi’s departure from the army was less, well, honorable. A terrible Marksman, truant, subject of negative statements by his fellow soldiers, and he did not protest when it was suggested that he should be discharged.  On the other hand, I never felt comfortable with one of my heroes being a model soldier.

What is reassuring is that one of the greatest guitarists ever (Zappa, Robert Quine, Rheihard, one of those is the best) could not hold a conversation while thinking about his guitar.  Somethings are more important than being a soldier.

The Legacy of Sun Records (part 1)

Last night I got home from work late, as is normal, wanting nothing more than a meal and something mindless to watch on TV I began chanel hopping.  There I cam across a programme called The Legacy of Sun Records.  (Yesterday I noted the sale of Sun records by Sam Phillips, see  here)

It was quite a good programme featuring interviews and performances of the second string acts signed to Sun by Phillips.  Among those was the wonderful Sonny Burgess, now in his 70s he was interviewed and caught in performance supported byJerry Smith on keyboards and the amazing Ace Cannon on sax.  He has more energy while singing on stage than many men half his age, and his voice the same power, but even more authority with the passage of time.

The upshot was an unexpected very late night hunting through CDs and records………..

On This Day – 1st July

I have a friend who does a mean ‘White Rabbit’ karaoke. Most people seem not to know what song she is singing when the music start but they all stop drinking to listen. Jo owes all that to this day in 1967 when Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit entered the Billboard chart. Mind you, the best version of this song is by Patti Smith (I know, heresy).

On this day in 1969 Sam Phillips sold Sun Records to Shelby Singleton. Whether it was a ‘good thing’ for either music, or the label, is an argument for another time. Just think about the people Sam recorded;

Elvis Presley
Carl Perkins
Roy Orbison
Johnny Cash
Jerry Lee Lewis

On This Day – 1st July 1956 was a good day!

On this day in 1956 Elvis sang on the Steve Allen show, for $5,000 – which was a lot for Elvis at the time. He sang Hound Dog which he recorded the next day. Naturally, his appearance was criticized by the critics and adults. Let’s face it, our parents never got rock ‘n’ roll – what is even sadder is that when those kids grew up and were parents they did not get their kid’s music either.

Also on this day an 11 year old Brenda Lee AKA Little Miss Dynamite (accept no imitations) signed her first recording contract on this day. I have a bit of a soft spot for Brenda Lee, as did my dad – which is the reason why I do. On the other hand he also liked Kathy Kirby who I thought then, and still do, was rubbish – with a capital Rub…..

Michael Jackson – What’s going on now?

I read with dismay an interview with the Nanny who has brought up MJ’s children. She was sacked by MJ shortly before his death. Apparently, he sacked her regularly and then re-hired her.

She maintains that the kids think of her as their mother, but she is being denied contact. The implication is that he who holds the kids gets the cash. (I am sure that seeking the custody of the children is motivated by nothing other than a genuine regard for the children’s future).

That being said, the money men are beginning to come out of the woodwork.

There is the story of a relative asking the nanny where MJ might have hidden cash. (story here)

More about the family wanting the kids, and the cash here.

The record company, MJ impersonators, the relatives, creditors all eye the estate (more here).

Lastly, just a bit about what life was really like for MJ, Here.

Michael Jackson Why Wait ’till he’s Dead?

That MJ was a tremendous recording artist is beyond doubt, although popularity does not guarantee quality – just remember the Spice Girls phenomena.

What really annoys me is that lots of people are going out and buying MJ records. Let me explain that a bit better. It is not that people are buying his records per se. It is that they are buying them just because he is dead. If they liked MJ’s music then why didn’t they buy the CDs when he was alive? Dieing is a good career move.

More Records That Changed The World

I have published an article about records that changed the world of music.  You can read it here.

I was quite happy with the list but now I have my doubts, where is Dylan, Wreckless, Jimi? That is the trouble with lists, 10 may be a convenient number but it is not big enough and I am sure that any arbitrary number would not be right either. If I just kept adding more and more records (and I could) then nothing would make it to the blog.

If I could add just one record I think that it might just be Sun RA’s Pictures of Infinity. That, however, to acknowledge his ground breaking body of work rather than just for that one record.

Michael Jackson

MJ died overnight as I slept in the UK.  While I am not going to go into details of his life (follow this link to WikiP if you want that stuff) his contribution to music is worth comment.

MJ  is significant to Real Rock and Blues for 2 reasons.  Firstly, it is difficult for many (younger) people to appreciate that in the early 60’s there was white music and there was black music, certainly in the USA – less so in the UK.  The Jackson 5 used rock guitar (white rock guitar) on some of their (black) pop music.  For association with that action that helped breakdown racial divides in music MJ is worthy of mention.  Not that as a young boy he would have been the main decision maker, but he was there.

Secondly, when I was asked to write an article about 10 records that changed the world of music Thriller was in there.  Until Thriller each album spawned one or two singles.  With Thriller the paradigm changed. 7 of the tracks were hits in the USA.  All around the world singles taken from Thriller were hits, and lots of them.  Post Thriller, music companies were looking for albums to be mere collections of hit singles rather than somewhere where an artist could breath (alright getting carried away a bit there).

One thing is for sure Thriller is the biggest selling album of all time.  It is likely to remain so as so many people now download their music.
